What Is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis and its uses in the practice of hypnotherapy are rapidly emerging as highly effective and valuable tools in solving the problems of people. Yet few procedures are less understood. Hypnosis is often erroneously thought of as a state of sleep or unconsciousness in which subjects surrender control of their mind to the hypnotist.

Hypnosis is not sleep, nor is it unconsciousness. Under hypnosis, subjects are fully aware of what is happening and are able to communicate with the hypno-therapist. Virtually every person is capable of entering a state of hypnosis. We are all in hypnotic trances everyday without realizing it. Common examples of self-hypnosis include:

»  When you sit through a boring lecture or presentation and cannot recall anything the presenter said.

»  When you are driving and miss your exit or can't remember driving the last 15-20 minutes because you have been "daydreaming." This is often called "highway hypnosis."

»  When you are totally engrossed in a television show or a good book and you are not fully aware of what is going on around you.

One of the greatest myths of hypnosis is that a person may lose control and be under the control of the hypnotist. While this makes a terrific story line for a late night movie, in reality, nothing can be further from the truth.

First, a person cannot be hypnotized against their will. A person who does not want to be hypnotized cannot be hypnotized or induced to say or do anything against their will. The subject is always in control. The goal of hypnotherapy is to help you use
your own mind to solve problems, not to take control of your mind.
